You can now watch Slingbox on Apple TV

The team at Sling Media, the creators of the Slingbox, are rolling out a bunch of new updates to compete in the ever-changing world of content streaming. The company just announced Blockbuster On Demand, a premium Over the Top (OTT) video services for the Slingbox 500. Slingbox 500 customers can now search, browse, view trailers and rent premium movies for viewing on their big screen TV in beautiful HD quality with a Blockbuster On Demand account. If you’re an iOS and Slingbox customer, you can now watch your Slingbox on Apple TV right from iPhone or iPad.

What is Slingbox?

A Slingbox connects to a video source, like your cable box, DVR, Blu-ray player, or security camera, and to a home network router. The Slingbox receives the video signal from the source, transcodes it and sends it to the internet. Not going to be home for the football game? Just use your cell phone and the Sling Media app ($14.99) to tap into your cable box and watch it wherever you are for no additional charge.

Slingbox 500 update: My Media

According to Sling Media, the new update for Slingbox 500 customers will also allow them to see enhanced My Media features including the ability to access personal photos and videos stored on a USB drive attached to the Slingbox 500 through the SlingPlayer client software—first on PC/Mac and coming soon on SlingPlayer for iOS and Android tablets and smartphones. Therefore, customers who have videos and photos stored on a hard drive at home can access the files remotely wherever they happen to be. SlingPlayer for Web has been updated as well and supports Microsoft Windows 8.1 and IE 11 along with the new OSX Mavericks for Mac and Safari 7.

And finally, Sling Media is pleased to formally announce AirPlay support for SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPad. This feature gives Apple TV customers the ability to watch their home TV on a second TV inside the home (without needing an additional set top box) or on a remote TV. Slingbox 500, Slingbox 350, Slingbox PRO-HD and Slingbox SOLO customers can take advantage of this fully updated and supported feature.

The Verdict: Slingbox

Yay: We love the Slingbox and have for years. New updates will only make it better for consumers. Great quality at a pretty good price for what it delivers.

Nay:  Sometimes quality in general will degrade, but luckily, Slingbox teaches you how to troubleshoot. So there are few problems for this product! App price still pricey at $14.99, but much better than the $29.99 it was a year ago.
